A. I would be honest. If you're not honest about your decision to interview out and they do have a relationship, your current professor will be honest. You'll look like your admitting fault by hiding the fact that you two don't get along.

How do you schedule a job interview during the week when you already have a job during business hours?
Q. They say it's best to look for a job while you're still employed. Well most employers only interview during business hours so how are you supposed to get time off in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day to go to a job interview? And what if you have multiple interviews during the week? What are you supposed to tell your employer and/or future employer about scheduling?
Asked by Jessica M - Thu Jun 7 19:13:51 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Many companies will work around your schedule and meet your after work. Otherwise - schedule as late as you can and go to your "Doctor's Appointment"

How to sell your abilities in a job interview?
Q. I have been having a hard time selling my abilities to job interviewers. My problem is this, I am from a culture where "tooting your own horn" is frowned upon. Hence, I don't know what exactly how to sell myself or abilities. It is obvious in my resume I have the skills required for the job, plus I show a personable personality, but when I don't get the call I am left in oblivion. I don't know what others expect me to say or not during the interview. I usually research the company but many times I find that this does not tell me anything about the department I am interviewing for, the particular job, or the culture of the company. I talk about my abilities and past experience, plus I answer all their questions. How do you sell yourself in… [cont.]

A. Usually there will be attributes or specific skills needed for the job listed in the job description. Practice stories about your past where you've demonstrated those skills/abilities and recount them when the interviewer asks about those qualities.

What questions are asked in a job group interview or how does it work any ideas?
Q. I have a job interview tomorrow for a Receptionist/Concierge position in an Assisted Living Senior Living Retirement, and it is going to be a group interview. In my pasts interviews they have always been 1 on 1. Can any one let me know how it works and what questions might be asked? I have never done a group interview before and not sure what to expect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A. The questions are about the same. What they tend to do in group interviews is they will switch off on questions and one watches your reactions and assesses you while the other asks the questions.

What to wear on an interview for an industrial job?
Q. My brother has a job interview next week. The job is as a lead worker maintaining industrial machines. What would be good to wear for the interview? Would jeans be too casual? Should he wear khakis? Also, he despises polo shirts but I think a T-shirt would be too casual. Any suggestions?
Asked by Silentgrrl - Sun Jul 27 01:11:24 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Even if it's an industrial job, applicants should always dress up for interviews. He probably won't be wearing a dress shirt and khakis on the job, but he'll only score points for looking professional. Jeans and a T-shirt are too casual for a job interview, so go for a button-down, khakis and nice shoes (no sneakers or flip-flops).

Q. I have a job interview tomorrow at Best Buy, this will be my first job interview. Do you think I should bring a resume and also should I dress up?

A. Dress nicely, show up 10 minutes early, and look the person who is interviewing you right in the eye. Also smile a lot! You do not need a resume. Especially since this is your first job you wouldn't have any work experience to put on it. Be ready to answer the following questions: Why do you want to work here? What is your availability (know your school schedule and other commitments)? Do you have any special skills? How many hours a week can you work? Those are all pretty basic and will be asked at any interview! good luck!

How long after a job interview should I call the place?
Q. I interviewed on July 10 and sent a thank you letter the following Monday. It has been a week since the job interview. They want to fill the position by July 27. They didn't mention additional interviews but that they would review their decisions based on other applicants. It sounded like they would have more applicants from this past Monday and Tuesday. Also, what exactly should I say? And the last day an applicant could have sent anything in for review was July 15. So perhaps their final round of interviews were yesterday and today and possibly going into early next week.
Asked by Chris - Fri Jul 17 18:49:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Often, after an interview is over, we spend days mulling over what the interviewer may have liked or disliked about our background and how well our skills stacked up against the competition. We remember all the details we forgot to bring up and wonder if that was the decisive factor in our not getting an offer (if we got the job, who cares about the interview?)

I don't know of anybody who doesn't get nervous during an interview though, there is that burning question in the back of our brains at the time of the interview asking "what if I mess up" or "what if I say something really dumb" or "what if they just don't like me"? Q. How do you present yourself in an interview if you have a bad reputation in your industry? My situation is that I nearly got fired from a job 4 years ago because of performance. However, I did move on from that, but people still want to bring that up everywhere I go. Somehow I feel that some people don't want to take a chance on me because of what others say. How do I get over other people saying things about me when I interview?

A. Look, we all made our mistakes and yours was four years ago. Admit to your mistake and tell them what you have done the next four years. No doubt you have learned from your mistake and you now have good examples of your current success. Try to get some recommendations from the people you have worked with the last four years.

Bringing a folder into a job interview with written notes about myself - bad or good idea?
Q. I thought of bringing in a folder to my job interview with my resume and a page of written notes with the headings of each of the company's core values, and underneath those headings my experiences to demonstrate I share those values. A. I would say you can have a professional looking folder with you and have some answers on there to review before the interview, but looking at it while at the interview is not a good idea. An interviewer wants to see if you can think on you feet. They look for good eye contact and how you present yourself. Having a sheet to look at will make you lose eye contact as you look at your answers, make you look less confident, and you run the risk of sounding like you are reading off a script which is no good. It is a good idea to have other things available. Perhaps work you have done or extra copies of references. Q. I had my interview last week(on wed)...The lady that interviewed me called on tuesday saying that my background check was almost complete and that was all they were waiting on. I got my copy of my background check yesterday morning, but haven't heard anything from the job. How much longer should I wait before doing a follow up? She really seemed like she wanted me to work there.

A. Its best to follow up asap. You want them to know that you are interested. Dont wait too long otherwise you might miss the window of opportunity. Its okay to bug them, trust me I have been known to call companies and they end up telling my what I want to hear. Give them a call tomorrow. Good Luck!

What do you wear to a job interview for a lifeguard position?
Q. My 15 year old step sister applied for a job as a lifeguard at the local pool and she has an interview today. What would be appropriate to wear?

A. Some nice jeans, a T-shirt or mabye a button up shirt, I don't really guess what shoes you wear would matter. Even if it's a job as a lifeguard you still want to show the interviewer you're serious about the job. Definantly not TOO casual but you wont need to dress up.. Don't bring friends to an interview, that's never good.

What questions to ask in a job interview to find engineers capable to invent?
Q. What questions to ask in a job interview to find physicists, engineers, programmers, mathematicians capable to invent?

A. It probably depends on what technology area you are focused on but you may want to focus on creativity rather than just technical strength. In general (using broad generalizations), straight A students are not the most creative. They may work the hardest or be good at studying and learning facts at least long enough to do well on tests but this is not a measure of creative thinking. You certainly want employees who are passionate about the subject/technology/etc. There are psychology tests that aim to measure creativity and there common traits shared by many creative people but I don't think there is any one method for identifying who will be a successful inventor.

A. Dressing up is never a bad thing. If you show up in a suit it shows your serious and professional. In your case at 15, if you dont feel like a professional quite yet try a nice button up and slacks. Its perfect for all occasions if you not quite sure what to wear. I suggest the office shirt line at Express. They're normally 40 a piece but totally worth it in terms of quality and fit.
