How can Third-party candidates qualify for federal funds for a presidential campaign?
Q. How can Third-party candidates qualify for federal funds for a presidential campaign?

A. You have to had a certain percentage of the vote in the last election. Some third party candidates, like the Libertarian Party's Harry Browne, refused to accept these funds even though they qualified because of his stance against government involvement in the peoples lives.

What candidates have won the presidential elections without winning their home states?
Q. I read that there have been two presidential candidates in history of the U.S. who won the general election without winning the electoral vote in their home state, but I can't find out which ones. My 12-year-old daughter's civics teacher didn't know and told her to look it up. Please make her look smart!

A. The definition of a home state usually refers to the state where the candidate was resident during the nomination process. The following candidates won the election, but lost the state that they were resident in at the time of nomination: Nixon in 1968 lost New York, Wilson in 1916 lost New Jersey, Polk in 1844 lost Tennessee

How come the Democratic candidates will blame America but not the radical Muslims?
Q. The Democratic candidates will gladly say that Americans are and America is one biggest polluters which is causing global warming. How come they will say that but they refuse to use the words "Muslim" or "Islam" when talking about America's enemies? How can you possibly stop terrorism if you refuse to identify the problem? How come they will blame us but not our enemies? I know that George Bush isn't any better and neither are some of the Republican candidates but I am asking about the Democrats at the moment.

A. To be fair, America is one of the biggest polluters in the world. No one disagrees with that, not even Bush (who is eternally optimistic about the situation regardless of any report by either side of the aisle saying bad). I don't know if it causes global warming or not (meaning does global warming exist), but it can't be good for anyone's health. And the Democrats are realistic about that at the very least. They love America too. But they know that America makes mistakes sometimes; and only by being mature enough to admit it and then to change it can America remain the country that it is (at least on an environmental scale). As far as our enemies. Admittedly our best known enemies are Muslim, but not all of our enemies are Muslim. [cont.]
