A suit is a set of garments crafted from the same cloth, consisting of at least a jacket and trousers. Lounge suits are the most common style of Western suit, originating in England as country wear. Other types of suit still worn today are firstly the dinner suit, part of black tie, which arose as a lounging alternative to dress coats in much the same way as the day lounge suit came to replace frock and morning coats; and secondly, rarely worn today, the morning suit. This article discusses the lounge suit (including business suits), which is part of the 'informal' dress code.

The variations in design, cut, and cloth, such as two- and three- piece, or single- and double- breasted, determine the social and work suitability of the garment. Often, suits are worn, as is traditional, with a collared shirt and necktie. Until around the 1960s, as with all men's clothes, a hat would have been also worn when the wearer was outdoors. Suits also come with different numbers of pieces: a two-piece suit has a jacket and the trousers; a three piece adds a waistcoat; further pieces might include a matching flat cap.

Originally, as with most clothes, a tailor crafted the suit from his client's selected cloth; these are now often known as bespoke suits. The suit was custom made to the measurements, taste, and style of the man. Since the Industrial Revolution, most suits are mass-produced, and, as such, are sold as ready-to-wear garments (though alteration by a tailor prior to wearing is common). Currently, suits are sold in roughly three ways:

  • bespoke, in which the garment is custom-made from scratch entirely for the customer, giving the best fit and free choice of fabric;
  • made to measure, in which a pre-made pattern is modified to fit the customer, and a limited selection of options and fabrics is available;
  • and finally ready-to-wear, which is least expensive and hence most common.

Place to buy interview suit for women?
Q. I'm looking to buy a suit (jacket and skirt/pants) and nice blouse for interviews and I was wondering what a nice place to buy one at would be. I need a place that has small sizes (I'm a 0). I was going to check at Express and Ann Taylor Loft but was looking for some other ideas. Thanks!

Should I wear a white suit to an interview with Merrill Lynch?
Q. I have an interview tomorrow with Merrill Lynch for a finance internship position and I was wondering if I should wear a white business suit that I just bought. The suit is extremely professional looking and very pretty. I figured it would be a good idea to wear white so that I could stand out from the rest of the other interviewees since people mainly wear a black suit. However, I want to play it safe because this is a really good company to work for, and I don't want to spoil my chances. So should I stick to wearing my black suit or be different and wear white?

A. It depends if you want the job, don't do it. Merrill Lynch is old school, they want newbies to blend. When you are the Top seller you can wear what you want. Old money likes old fashion rules. So the choice is yours

For a interview, how vital is a suit jacket for a woman?
Q. A lot of interview sites state that anything short of a full suit, dress shirt, pumps, and a attache case is unacceptable. However, the majority of these sites are for the business world. Not everyone is interviewing for a business position. So for example when interviewing for a job that has an office casual or less dress code, would something like a shell and a cardigan be acceptable or for that matter a dress shirt sans jacket?

A. A suit jacket is not critical but always looks nice. 'Understated' is a good word for interview dress requirements, as in no flashy jewelry, no wild colors, etc. Certainly nothing with holes in it. Wear something that would look nice at church or at a wedding or a fancy restaurant. I know, many people these days show up anywhere wearing anything, but you want to make a good impression, and what you wear can help that.
